The finished computer generate artworks are finally on the wall, which look awesome!
Can you pick out the different children by just the photo?
In term one, as part of our health unit we each wrote positive words about each other on a piece of paper to fill each other's buckets.

As part of our social skills lessons, we have combined with art to create a Pop Art using a variety of different words that promote positive behaviours and attitudes such as unique, manners, fun, appreciate...
We have had to use skills such as drawing, cutting, measuring the size of different pieces of paper that we are layering, matching colours that will work well together, writing in bubble/block writing and finally, layering and gluing it together. It ended up being a much longer activity but we've learnt some skills along the way but also perseverance and problem-solving. We will post the finished pictures soon. Prior to our visit to The Groynes, we read a book about food webs and food chains. There was some amazing discussion that came about from this.
The children worked in small groups to define a producer, consumer, herbivore, carnivore and omnivore and then to look at how a food web and food chain are put together. The big questions, which they answered with incredible detail, was what would happen if one of the creatures in the food web suddenly decreased in numbers. The food web we used is below. We started looking and mapping and position this week in maths. We were really good at know things like right and left turns and clockwise and anticlockwise turns.
The challenge is now to follow (and write) instructions to get from one place to another. We worked out that we need to be facing the right way and have our map the right way to be able to do this, but we need to keep our map facing the right way while moving our bodies. You can see the girls below walking around the classroom to work this out. This term we have been learning how to use watercolour paints. We have tried different techniques such as tonal shading, blending colours, resist pictures using white crayons/pastels and will also try a couple more techniques next term.
Here are the beautiful artworks created using our stream study, friendly birds as inspiration. There are a couple of touch-ups to do but we couldn't wait to share them! Please leave your comments below. Last week the Science Alive Stardome visited Ilam School and Room 17 visited on Tuesday. The half an hour went very quickly but we got to see things such as the Milky Way Galaxy, many constellations of stars including Matariki, and even the planets Jupiter and Venus. The photos really don't do it justice. We were able to hear about Maori legends intertwined with the stars.
Some children found it fascinating that the Matariki group of it stars are real and not just in the stories we've been reading. We did some constellation art afterwards...photos to follow... We will also be making an artwork based around the '7 Kites of Matariki' story, combining our newly acquired watercolour painting skills with the story. (These amazing new painting skills have been busy creating our calendar art pictures over the past couple of weeks.) Today we combined our learning about Matariki and our Ilam School Science Learner Skills into one lesson. We had heard about stars during our visit to the Stardome on Tuesday being big balls of gas, so today we made little balloons of gas. Science Alive provided us with some wonderful activities as follow up from their visit and I've picked out a few that support out development of our science skills. Two of our Ilam School Science Learner Skills that we were focussing on today. The focus was on being able to discuss and record what we saw (and heard) more that the big scientific concepts. To get us started... As I did the experiment in front of them I didn't tell them the instructions. So that they could use their 'Powers of Observation' I got them to watch what I did and give me the instruction to write down. There were some very keen eyes and ears, though this seems more like the chance to get into a photo!!! So, what happens when you have more items than needed for this experiment? You change the amounts and see what happens... We made predictions about what we thought might happen first. Green balloon: suggested 2T vinegar, 1t baking powder (yes powder... we were out of baking soda) Blue balloon: 2T vinegar, 2t baking powder Red balloon: 3T vinegar, 2t baking powder Tomorrow we will finish off the recording part of what we saw and heard.
Today we finally got to head over to the Ilam stream (Okeover Stream). Today we were just observing and taking everything in. We were using our senses sight, hearing, and smell. We were also comparing what was natural and what was manmade. This lead to an interesting discussion about people; natural or manmade? We then discussed what activities people were actually doing...walking and talking, on their phones, biking, skateboarding, driving the Uni carts...were any of these activities natural?
There was a alot of discussion and excitement about what was seen, especially when we got to see something living - ducks!!! From there we were visited by fantails, blackbirds and what we think was a little waxeye. We could hear the beautiful chirping and songs when we stopped and listened, but also noticed there were a lot of manmade noises...cars, alarms, building noises, skateboards, talking, carts... A lot of questions were brought up and some we may be able to answer throughout the inquiry:
The children were also surprised at the amount of rubbish/litter at the stream. On Thursday of Week 7, we are going to 'run a kilometre for kids!' The Ilam School House Captains have chosen to support the KidsCan charity. We are also doing some fundraising for our very own school so we can purchase some picnic tables and welcome signs in different language.
How can you help? Get some friends, family, relatives or neighbours to sponsor you to run the kilometre. Remember to explain what you are going to do to earn the money and who the money is going to. This is your last weekend to gather some sponsors! KidsCan Website
This week was anti-bullying week and Ilam School celebrated in a number of ways. We started off by sitting together as a whole school to eat lunch; something which will continue during fine weather. We had buddy time together with Room 10 to make paper chains with statements reading 'I am _______ and I am proud ______'. Children filled in each space with their name and something they are proud of. Three children per class were selected to stand up in assembly to share theirs to show how it's great to be different! Medha, Anya and Thea shared their statements.
During our buddy time we also spent time painting out own rocks into multi-coloured fish. This was based on a gorgeous book called 'Only One You' that uses painted rock fish to tell a story with amazing advice. There was some amazing teamwork to complete these activities!
There will be a space in the school where all the painted rocks can be displayed together. After rocks were painted, there was some time to chill with our buddies and read some books. It was funny where some managed to squeeze themselves!
There was also an opportunity to create a poster, song, movie, rap... about anti-bullying. Here is the link to the blog:
